Keane Ceramics
evolved from Roger and Margaret Keane operating Churinga
Potters Studio in 1973 at Somersby. Margaret produced
domestic stoneware pottery and provided tuition to students
for many years. Roger’s interest in ceramics was
more focused on artistic designs, experimenting with
textures of clay and shapes. Both potters had an excellent
reputation and held many successful exhibitions.
In 1977 Potters Master Clays a small local clay processing
plant producing three clay bodies became available for
sale. Roger and Margaret were excited by this opportunity
having used their clays and gained knowledge of their
clay manufacturing process. They purchased the plant
at Lisarow and started expanding their range of products.
In 1979 a new factory was built at Somersby and Potters
Master Clays was moved adjacent to Churinga Potters
Studio. The Business name was also changed at this time
to Keane Ceramics Pty Ltd.
A unique balance was found between Rogers thirst for
product research and clay development and Margaret’s
throwing and production skills. All final testing of
new products was completed in house through Churinga
Pottery Studios.
Ongoing testing and quality control also went hand
in hand with the Churinga Pottery Studio using a wide
range of the clays manufactured by Keane Ceramics for
their range of domestic pottery. The range was expanded
from the original three local clays to over ten formulated
bodies.
With business growing at a steady rate during the mid
eighties Margaret discontinued teaching and production
pottery to move into a larger roll dealing with the
demands of the Business. During that time of growth
the factory underwent three extensions to accommodate
for increased production and raw materials storage.
In the early part of 1990’s Margaret and Roger
were pleased when their son and daughter, Giles and
Babette Keane showed an interest in the business and
both took on an active roll within the company.
By 1999 both Roger and Margaret after many hard working
years and dedication to the ceramic industry made the
decision to retire from the business.
At this time Babette and Giles took on new roles as
Directors for Keane Ceramics continuing the family commitment
to the manufacture of high quality clays and customer
service. Roger continues to remain active within the
business and provides technical support when needed.
Margaret also lending a hand during busy periods.
Moving into the year 2001 saw the introduction of a
new face to Keane Ceramics.
A workshop area was developed for Chris James and his
studio was moved from Wahroonga to the factory site
at Somersby.
Continuing the tradition of production pottery and
in house testing Chris has taken on a shared roll in
quality control, product development and technical support
learning from and working with Roger in this area.
The association of Chris James with Keane Ceramics provides
a valuable link to our past gained knowledge ensuring
that it continues to be built upon for the future.
Keane Ceramics now produce over 20 different types
of clay and casting slips and continually improve and
developing new clays.
